I'm pretty discouraged right now, I know I was overdue for a bad race but I didn't think it would be as bad as this. I went out a bit fast at 6:32 (I was shooting for 6:50) and I slowed up a bit the second mile with a 7:00 and then the wheels came off. I felt hot heading out to the three mile mark but I could feel my right heel rubbing against my shoe. By the time I hit the three mile mark with a 7:25 mile my left heel was rubbing too. After that walked for a minute or so and started running again. I have no idea what mile four was and then I stopped for good a few blocks later as a nice blister on my right heel was just agonizing. The left heel would have blistered if I had kept going. I guess my flats aren't any good for anything longer than a 5K.
I need to get a bit more consistency in my training and I need to work my calisthenics more regularly than I have been. I even went and got a tire replaced on my bike so I can start getting some miles on my bike.
I always think the first race of the summer can be tough, because you haven't acclimated to the summer heat and humidity. Not to mention that you are coming off of a well deserved vacation. Lots of factors stacked against you today. You'll tear it up at Scholastic Challenge.
Sorry about your feet :-( Better to not let them get torn up at the beginning of summer! Jordan ran the 5k leg of the biathalon today as a favor to Bob Thompson. He had a fast biker that wanted to break the course record--and they did!! Jordan won the 5k by 2 min over 2nd place and they broke the record by 9 min! He said his split was about 15:55 or so. Get those tootsies better for scholastic!
Sorry to hear about the DNF. I knew as I ran at 7 this morning that the humidity would make it tough. I know you would have pushed through if just that but smart to not aggravate the blisters, they can hang around for a loong time. Heal up (no pun intended) and see you on the 21st. Matt M
Thanks Matt and Dan. I'm glad I got the bad race out of the way. Hopefully I can come back at Scholastic and crank a good 5K.
You did hear the word "bike" Dan. I have a Specialized hybrid I bought a few years ago. I like it but I'm generally only able to maintain 17-18 mph on it when I get going. I keep saying that I should have shelled out the extra $400 for the road bike but I just couldn't justify it. With grad school starting in about a month I think I'd rather pay tuition than trade up.

That's pretty awesome! I was wondering why Jordan wasn't there.

Aaron, that's a tough break that happens to everyone. Just consider that it is out of the way early in the season.
Did I see the work "Bike," That sounds like multi-sport training....
