Watch out 30 - 34!
The 30 - 34 age group just got a little tougher as I moved up a division as of yesterday. The Scholastic Challenge is up this weekend and I'm hoping to start my thirties off with a nice showing and some hardware. Truth be told, I am ecstatic to be out of the 25 - 29 age group as it was getting ridiculously tough from all the young studs who don't have families kicking the snot out of me because they can devote five hours a day to exercise. I'm lucky if I get five hours a week.

It's funny how things are different region to region. Around here, 25-29 is a cakewalk compared to 30-34.
25-29 USED to be a cakewalk but it has slowly gained quite a bit of respectability. If you scored each age group like a cross country meet over some of the bigger races last year the only age groups that would beat the 25-29 consistenly were the 15-19 and 40-44 age groups. 20-24 is a cakewalk as most of those kids are in college and only run one or two races a year but it is a rough group when the college studs show up. Even the college studs are hard pressed to beat the 40-44 guys. Another very rough age group around here is 50-54. 35-39 just got pretty tough too. 30-34 last year was pretty top heavy with 34 year olds and they've all turned 35 and moved up.
At any given race in 25-29 this year there are three guys who have run between 18:12-18:21 for 5K, three other guys who've run mid-19s and are capable of faster and the always dangerous David D. who hasn't run a race yet this year. If David doesn't run Scholastic this weekend I'm guessing he's out for the season.
I didn't mention myself in that scouting report but as you can see if I hadn't escaped into the 30-34 age group I would probably be racing for fourth place in 25-29 in quite a few races!

Thanks Natalie. My wife has been waiting for me to join her in the "thirties" and printed quite a few slightly embarassing photos of me to be posted in my work area. It was pretty funny.
